What is a concussion?
A concussion is caused by acceleration or deceleration of the brain, following a significant impact to the head or elsewhere on the body.
One common misconception is that someone must be hit in the head and be knocked unconscious, to be called a concussion.
However, a significant enough hit to the body may cause a whiplash effect and result in enough force to the brain to cause injury.
Symptoms
Here are just a few of the most common symptoms someone may experience, following a neck or head injury:
- Headaches
- Neck pain
- Nausea
- Feeling emotional
- Difficulty concentrating
- Difficulty remembering
- Changes in sleep patterns
- Blurry or double vision
- Sensitivity to light or noise
- Balance problems
Diagnosis
Concussion and post-concussion syndrome are serious conditions. If you, or someone you know, has experienced a head or neck impact recently and then experienced any of the above symptoms, please schedule an assessment by one of our healthcare providers!
Treatment
For the first 24-48 hours after an injury, full rest is generally recommended. All physically and mentally taxing activity is to be postponed.
Following this rest period, a gradual increase in mental and physical exertion is prescribed, and symptoms are monitored.
If symptoms don’t quickly resolve, the following treatments may help:
- Manual therapy of the neck
- Diet and nutritional changes
- Balance and eye movement exercises
Our goal with this type of injury is a gradual return to work / play, progressively increasing your mental and physical activity while ensuring your safety!
