Naturopathic medicine is a distinct primary care health system that combines modern scientific knowledge with traditional and natural forms of medicine.
A licensed Naturopath in Ontario requires 4 years of post-graduate training, in an accredited medical school. The education focuses on assessment, diagnosis and treatment of all conditions from head to toe. Over and above treatment, naturopaths focus on disease prevention.
Naturopathic Medicine and Conventional Medicine
A common misconception is that patients believe they can see either a naturopathic doctor (ND) OR a conventional medical doctor (MD); however, this is not the case. Most people see both an ND and a MD.
Naturopathy compliments conventional medicine. Our goals are similar – we want to treat the patient before us – the main difference is how we treat.
Medical doctors tend to focus on pharmaceutical intervention, whereas naturopaths focus more on natural compounds as well as lifestyle medicine such as diet/nutrition, exercise, sleep and stress management.
Does Naturopathic Medicine Have Evidence of Working?
Absolutely. The same type and quality of research conducted on pharmaceutical medications has also been carried out on natural compounds and other naturopathic interventions.
Whether it be a simple dietary change, an herb or nutrient, there is evidence natural medicine works.
A review article published in 2015 investigated the effects of naturopathic medicine in select chronic diseases and showed great results .
Always ask your doctors about the evidence as well as the expectations of any treatment you start.
How Exactly Do Naturopaths Work?
We begin our time together with a 1-hour initial intake. This time is important to develop a deep understanding of your past and current state of health. We aren’t only treating symptoms; the underlying issues are also addressed.
Our Assessments: we gain so much understanding from your medical history. We talk a lot during your initial visit to gain a throughout understanding. We can also request lab testing, some of which your medical doctors can’t even request!
Our Treatments: treatment will vary based on your individual case. There are so many contributing factors behind any disease, and every person presents differently. We have a wide range of treatment options:
- Botanical (herbal) medicine
- Nutraceuticals (vitamins, minerals, amino acids)
- Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine
- Physical medicine
- Diet and nutrition counselling
